At first Yancy resisted handing over his Caddy—a Christmas present to himself. But when Campbell started to offer to rent Beth’s car for two hours, he tossed the keys to her. She knew it wasn’t selfishness that held him back—the car was rarely used these days and she was actually doing him a favor—he was simply leveraging to get information out of her.

“Get me that information on Officer Mize and we’ll talk later after I update Tyndell and check in with Detective Archer,” she told him. While she would like to skip Tyndell, it couldn’t be avoided, plus she needed to fish for information on whether Dwayne Saunders was making more protests about access to his mother’s property—or worse.

Thankfully, there was no sign of the press as she drove out of the parking lot. On the downside, Kelsey had warned that a significant number of them were back at the entrance to Maple Trails. No station would miss Detective Archer’s return to the property—all the more reason to check in with Bryce, once she took care of other pressing business.

“Sorry,” she said. “It’s my father’s car, and I’m trying to bribe this guy not to use it like a lounge chair…or a fire hydrant for that matter.”

“Nice wheels. I’m not sure it’s less of an attention-getter than the Cody mobile.”

At least her father had resisted the temptation of personalized tags. “It’s the best I could do on short notice. I won’t be here long.” Giving the dog pressing against her thigh an affectionate last pat, she crossed to the house. Blade stepped aside to let her enter, and as she passed him, she caught the scent of soap and coffee.

“Can you stay long enough to have some?” he asked, gesturing to his mug on the counter. “I promise it’s not last night’s reheated.”

Two jokes in a row. Campbell wondered if this was a glimpse of his real personality or if she’d sounded worse on the phone than she’d imagined and he was trying to make her feel better. “Thanks, but no. I’m strung pretty tight already. Besides, I meant it, I really have to get back to—”

Blade held up a finger and approached her slowly, cautiously reaching up toward her face. When she realized he intended to take off her sunglasses, she took a step back and
